Jeremy Nguyen recommends Beauty

For a colorful book, it is full of dark themes. Men are driven mad, women grow full of jealousy, and soon kingdoms trade her gifts for personal gain. All this because people believe beauty has importance and gives divine powers to its beholder.

The ugly Coddie is granted one wish, and she wishes to be beautiful. The fairy does not actually give her physical beauty, but the perception that she is to the people who see her face. She becomes a trophy to be won by lords and kings, and she embraces them in order to leave her Cinderella-esque village life of servitude. Her problems increase, though, as men of power wage wars to make her their bride.

The book itself is an object of beauty. It seduces readers for it’s art, and creates a need to have it, much like the characters in the book. You have to have this book the moment you see it.

It is told as a fairytale, but to tell it children would disturb them (note: It’s not for children), and adults would be embarrassed to and guilty of having the same weaknesses. The fantasy elements are familiar to anyone who’s familiar with Disney, but the adult themes make this one too dark to be PG. The discomforts of a taboo subject such as carnal lust and petty jealousy will make any person reevaluate how they view beauty and if it really is worth those feelings.

I kept a sketchbook when I went to San Diego Comic-Con this year. So many cool things happened. We met George RR Martin, got to watch Faith Erin Hicks receive an Eisner, and see the cast of Avengers walk by our booth. None of those stories are in this sketchbook, just jokes! It’s not as thorough as another sketchbook I kept this year, in Angouleme (“Cheese Doodles”), but maybe funnier!

The research I got to do on this Rihanna piece was so much fun. I love Rihanna so much now.
